The Pantone Color of the Year, Marsala (always makes me think of chicken marsala), is everywhere. Wearing it feels especially right this winter.
Each year since 1990, the Pantone Color Institute has selected a color of the year: a shade that it predicts we’ll be accenting our homes and, of course, our outfits with for the next 11 months. The inspiration for the color comes from many places: runways, street style, film, cars, art, and technology. Marsala is a fortified wine from Sicily that is often used in cooking (hence the chicken marsala). Pantone’s Marsala is warm, savory, and subtly sexy—and it’s easier to wear than you’d think.
Here are five Marsala picks, with tips on what to wear them with, all under $50.
1. The Heels
Pumps don’t have to be prim. Pair these with faux leather pants (like the ones I wore here), an oversized, luxe sweater, and a beanie for a low-key night out OR dark jeans (roll them up a bit at the ankle) and a slinky top for a date night.
Price: $27.90
Price: $35
Wear these hi-tops with a dress (like the one I’m wearing here) to put a twist on a feminine weekend look.
Price: $40 (on sale!)
Ok, so not quite an accessory, but throw this button up over a gray thermal top, slim-cut jeans, and these boots for a cool-girl winter look, wherever you live: east coast, west coast, or in between!
Price: $20
Wear this romantic-style jacket with slouchy boyfriend jeans, black booties, and lots of gold bangles.
Price: $49.95
Plus, a splurge: The Bag
This droolworthy backpack is on sale now for just under $200 at openingceremony.com (it was originally $640!). The chicest way to wear it? With head-to-toe black.
Hope this gets you in a Marsala mood… see you next week!
