The Rosemarie Look features vintage photos of my English grandmother, Rosemarie, combined with links to similar pieces that loosely replicate her style today. The series is a celebration of my grandmother and of timeless style, but it's also a way to honor everyone who's traveled to the U.S., as she did in her 20s. It's for every foreigner, past and present, who came to this country, fell in love and stayed; who, at times, didn't feel they belonged, and yet who left an indelible impression on their loved ones and everyone they knew.
My grandmother was the youngest of four. She had two sisters and one brother. Their mother ("Granny," as my mom called her) was from Dublin and their father was English. One sister is still alive, that's Bridget, in the top right photo on the left. The little boy in these photos is my uncle Kim. Can you see the date stamped on the right photo? August 1956. It was a little less than a year later that my mom was born.
The Rosemarie that I knew pretty much always wore jeans, except maybe when she went to church. Then she'd wear these slouchy, flat black boots and a long skirt. I was always kind of surprised to see her dressed up. I think she looks so beautiful in the dresses above, and since I rarely wear dresses myself, I wanted to round up a few pretty vintage-looking ones for inspiration. I saw a blogger mention the site The Other Sparrows on Instagram, and now I'm pretty obsessed with their pieces. A lot of the styles below are from there.
