When it comes to my closet: statement t-shirts? Check. But what about statement pullover sweaters? Not so much. This is my first one and I’m in love.
I must admit though, there’s something about a gray pullover sweater that reminds me of the horrid matching sweatpant outfits kids would wear back in elementary and junior high school. (I was nerdy myself, I just happened to avoid the sweatpants pitfall. Thanks Mom!) In other words, it’s one of those trends that seems outdated (and even a bit sloppy), but actually is cool in an alternative way if you pair it with stuff already in your closet…
…like dark jeans, a beanie, and black booties; perfect relaxed weekend style. If you want to look casually dressed up (totally a thing) at night, pair it with a blazer, white skinny jeans, and strappy heels or boots. Adding some luxe jewelry or accessories, like this faux fur bag, below, helps to elevate the look too. (The more modern the pieces, the cooler the sweater looks.)
The ducks approve of the pullover. I know because they told me so.
I saw this sweater when Tom and I were visiting friends in Connecticut back in January. We were at brunch, and I looked up to see a girl sitting at a table nearby wearing it. She was likely a student at Yale, which was only a stone’s throw away from the cafe we were at. So of course, I couldn’t stop looking at the sweater (poor girl).
Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus is one of my favorite paintings: the colors, the beautiful shape of Venus’ body, her hair, and the seashell. All so lovely and eye-pleasing. And although I have never written or posted the phrase “I woke up like this” on any kind of social media, I thought it was funny and random over such an iconic piece of artwork. A few days later, after I was home, my dear friend found the sweater online (you’re the best Alicia!) at Rad.co. If you’re a Kanye fan, then you’re going to love this site. It think it’s the only sweater without a Kanye lyric on it. (“I woke up like this” isn’t a Kanye lyric, right?)
By the way, above, and in the picture with the ducks, I’m wearing my new Tretorn boots. They’re great for splashing through the puddles and lakes that surface in the NYC streets in winter. Granted, winter is pretty much over (yay!), but Tretorn has some awesome rain boots too—and rainy season is definitely heading our way.
Here are some other cool statement pullovers for your viewing (and shopping) pleasure: ballet dancers, rosé, unicorns, Williamsburg, French, hangry, kitten, you’re a hero, yoga & wine, fringe-y, and just because.
Tom tried out an old-fashion (i.e. not digital) camera for this shot, and although he doesn’t like how it came out, I kinda do.
Thanks so much for reading, I hope you find a fun statement sweatshirt look to try out (or put yours in rotation a few more times before the season’s over).
Xoxo, H
