There’s something about suspenders that makes me think of grandpas. And I mean that in the best way possible.
You could say I’m into “grandpa” style. There’s something really fun about dressing up in boyish (mannish?!) looks. This shirt is from the mens section at H&M, and these jeans I’ve had, well, forever! (Like since high school forever, gulp!)
Why suspenders? First of all, they make your look stand out, easily, but never in an overdressed way. The truth is, wearing suspenders, especially as a woman, makes you pretty badass. And that always stands out in a good way. Second of all, they’re a great alternative to overalls. Say you’re not the overall type. Or you’re hesitant to put down the $$$ for a new pair when the trend might be over in a few months. Enter suspenders.
These suspenders, above, button onto my wide-leg jeans, but you can easily buy a pair that clips onto pants you already own for as low as $11! Which brings me to number three: They cost next to nothing! Think of suspenders as an inexpensive, easy way to up the ante on any pair of denim you already own. Once I’ve got them on, it’s easy for me to channel a bit of James Dean’s American-rebel style (by the way, the anniversary of his death was yesterday, September 30) or Annie Hall’s (i.e. Diane Keaton) impossibly cool borrowed-from-the-boys look.
I kept the rest of the outfit super simple, with the only “feminine” touches being the red lipstick (it’s MAC in Gash) and bold-colored rings.
I’m meeting up with two of my dear friends from high school to see the Weekend in the Country show in Maryland this Saturday. (Two words: Sam Hunt. Ahhh, I love him and can’t wait to see him live.) It might rain the entire time (gah!), but with my longtime besties by my side, it will all be juuuust fine! (Well, hopefully… I’m bringing full rain gear, just in case, i.e. rain boots and an umbrella. Wish me luck! Follow along for some rain-soaked adventure on Instagram and Snapchat (@heatherfurlow).) I hope you’re doing something fun this weekend, and getting some time in to relax.
Xoxo, H
